Students will have the opportunity to work at one of the twenty SQMS partner institutions, including Fermilab, Rigetti Computing, Northwestern University, Ames National Lab, NASA Ames and more.
SQMS is one of five elite National Quantum Initiative centers funded by the DOE and was established with the goal of building and deploying a next-generation quantum computer based on superconducting technologies. This internship offers students the opportunity to work with SQMS Center scientists and engineers on projects at the frontier of scientific research in quantum science and technology. This program is aimed at expanding diversity in our Center; we define diversity broadly as any group that is historically or contemporarily underrepresented in the STEM fields, including under-represented minorities, first generation students, and women. This program is designed to identify educationally or economically disadvantaged undergraduates enrolled in UC San Diego who are likely to succeed in graduate school, and to provide these students with undergraduate educational experiences that will prepare them to assume positions of leadership in industry, government, public service, and academia following completion of a doctoral STEM degree.
Once chosen as UC LEADS scholars, the students embark upon a two-year program of scientific research and graduate school preparation guided by individual Faculty Mentors. Scholars are provided with an excellent opportunity to explore their discipline, experience a research environment, and improve their opportunities for future study in their chosen field. Each scholar is mentored by a member of the UC faculty, who assists the student in designing a plan of research and enrichment activities fitted to the individual interests and academic goals of the scholar. The UC San Diego Physical Sciences Mentorship Program is a collaboration between the Division of Physical Sciences Student Success Center and the Alumni Office. The objective of the program is for mentors to support students in navigating the job search process during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students-- with a priority given to graduating seniors and graduate students. Moreover, mentors can provide specific information regarding career paths, goal setting, occupations and industries, as well as provide general advice for students for life after college. By connecting to a mentor, not only do students get to absorb their mentor's expertise and knowledge, but the students also gain valuable networking experience that will be critical to their success.
The program is mutually beneficial to mentors as it provides mentors with a meaningful volunteer opportunity to learn about the current student experience while becoming a more engaged alumni. The goal of the program is to foster effective and beneficial partnerships between students and alumni/ industry professionals. Interactions will be done via email, phone, Skype, Zoom, or other form of virtual meeting as determined by the mentor and mentee. The expectation is that each pair will communicate at least 30 mins/month for the duration of the 5-month program. This is an all expenses paid 2 week program happening from April 4 - 15th. It is an immersive training program for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars interested in pursuing a teaching-intensive faculty position. A select cohort of interested graduate and/or postdoctoral students will be invited to Lafayette to participate in a brief, but intensive two-week experience. Upon arriving at Lafayette, each participant will be paired with a Lafayette chemistry faculty mentor who will advise them throughout the program. Then, to expose them to life as a faculty member at a PUI, participants will engage in class observations, one-on-one meetings with their mentor and other chemistry faculty, and science education and career workshops. These workshops will cover topics such as syllabus development, course planning, student engagement, active learning, and preparing for the job market. Finally, the participants will gain real-life experience by carrying out a teaching assignment, while being observed and coached by their faculty mentor, and give a research seminar targeted towards our undergraduates on their doctoral or postdoctoral work. By the end of two weeks, the participants will have been exposed to contemporary science pedagogy, planned and instructed at least two lessons in their chemical subdiscipline, and reflected on the effectiveness of those lessons with an experienced faculty member and their cohort. Not only will the participants be immersed in life as a faculty member at a PUI, but they will also learn and hone their teaching skills to make them more competitive applicants for such positions.
